Read Across America: Part I

This week is Read Across America, a week for celebrating reading in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, which is today. Thomas' school does fun activities all week, and since I always want to encourage Sylvie's love of reading, we decided to make it a week-long celebration at home too.

So every night we are doing something special together that ties into a favorite book or books. Last night we had vanilla ice cream with blueberry sauce for dessert and read 2 of our favorite blueberry related books, Jamberry by Bruce Degan and Old Bear by Kevin Henkes. Sylvie's favorite scene in Old Bear is when the bear dreams it's raining blueberries and he opens his mouth and sticks out his tongue to catch them. It's a scene she loves to act out in the shower. [Kevin Henkes' books are so beautiful. We can't wait to check out his newest, My Garden.]

Tonight in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday we made Cat in the Hat hats and had Green Eggs and Ham for dinner. [On a non-Dr. Seuss day, it would be called Scrambled Eggs with Spinach, Ham and Goat Cheese.] If you are looking for some Dr. Seuss related fun this week, check out One Pretty Thing's Dr. Seuss Round-up. Such great ideas! I love the green Jello eggs.
More fun to come... Sylvie is so excited about Thursday night's Olivia dinner, she already invited Grandma, Papa and Hank.
