Dinner & Science

The New York Times Food Blog has a frequent feature called What We're Reading and it was from that feature that I was introduced to the blog dash and bella, and specifically to this post where the author explores sardines with her son. Turning dinner into science is exactly the kind of thing Sylvie loves, so yesterday we picked up some whole trout from Costco. Sylvie was beyond excited. The trout had to sit by her in the cart and also in her car seat with her the entire drive home. Thomas decided to pan fry them, with Sylvie as his very enthusiastic assistant.
I will spare you the pictures of our half eaten fish, but the trout was definitely a favorite dinner. Sylvie couldn't believe she got an entire fish, complete with head and tail and even a skeleton to explore. She ate her entire trout and Nora ate quite a lot too. We had one trout leftover and Sylvie decided to have it for snack today, with Nora helping her. We love dinner and science.

Tonight's dinner was meatballs and recently I began letting Sylvie touch meat when she helps me cook. When she's done I make her scrub, use sanitizer and change shirts, but she loves getting to do such a grown-up job. Today she actually rolled all of the meatballs herself and it was a big help to me. When I told her I didn't know any 3 year-old that could roll meatballs she told me, "well now you do."

Also on the subject of science, this conversation from today:

Sylvie: If I stop pedaling my bike, will electricity make my bike move?
Me: No, your bike doesn't have electricity.
Sylvie: For my birthday, I want a bike with electricity.
