The Training Wheels are Off

A couple of weeks ago, Sylvie told us she wanted to take off her training wheels. We live across from a school with plenty of asphalt., so we decided to head over and give it a try.

The first attempts were made on the grass to cushion the falls.
Even with the cushioning of the grass, there was still quite a lot of frustration and some lying on the ground screaming, "ALL MY BONES ARE BROKEN!" Here is one of the happier pictures of a fall, but they definitely weren't all so joyful. At one point Sylvie told Thomas she wanted her training wheels back on and I heard him tell her they couldn't go back on once they were off. I wasn't so sure about this method but figured I'd leave this one to Sylvie and Thomas.
We were semi-surprised and quite impressed when Sylvie asked on Day 2 to go over to the school and practice some more. Sylvie and Thomas headed over and Nora and I made our way about 15 minutes later. I couldn't believe my eyes when I walked out the door, looked across the street and saw this:
Something had clicked! Sylvie was riding about 50 feet at a time. And she has only gotten better since then.
Thomas has been tireless and amazing teaching Sylvie to ride a bike, and he has the aching back to prove it.
And Sylvie has practiced and practiced, and she IS A BIKE RIDER!

Yesterday was our friend Cameron's birthday party (he's one!), so instead of the school yard Sylvie got to bike at a beautiful bike park in Irvine at Cam's party.Check her out:

It has been so much fun to watch Sylvie try, and fall, and stand up, and try again, and accomplish her goal. Yesterday, while eating a giant piece of watermelon she told us, "I eat the biggest watermelon because I'm a big kid that rides with no training wheels".
