Play Dough

I usually make play dough for Sylvie but a couple of weeks ago during a trip to Target, I thought, "what the heck?" and threw some play dough into the cart figuring it would be one less thing for me to do. Two weeks later, I am a bigger fan than ever of homemade play dough. It is so easy to mix up a nice, big batch and it's more pliable than the store bought play dough. It also lasts longer and doesn't dry out. I ended up throwing out our store bought play dough after about 2 weeks because it was dry and crumbly. Homemade play dough always lasts months, pretty much until I feel like it's got to be germy and it's time to replace it.

So last weekend I cooked up a new batch of play dough. Since it was Halloween weekend, I decided to make it pumpkin pie scented using a mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and vanilla extract. It smells so good. Sylvie did take a taste but play dough is really salty so she figured out very quickly that the taste didn't match the smell. So now I am thinking of all the other scented play doughs I can make through holiday season. Sugar cookie? Peppermint? Mmmm.
Sylvie's Favorite Play Dough
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
2 tablespoons oil
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
2 cups water
For coloring you can add 1 tsp food coloring or 1 packet of Kool-Aid, which also makes it scented

Mix ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the dough no longer sticks to the side of the pan. Remove from the pan, and when cool, knead for a few minutes.
