Max Laid an Egg

A few mornings ago, I noticed our Maxine acting strangely. The chickens usually stay out of their coop during the day, but Max kept walking up the ladder and then back down a few minutes later. She repeated this several times. I wondered if there could be egg laying going on, then promptly forgot all about it. When I came home from picking Sylvie up from school, we walked through the side yard which reminded me of Max's strange behavior. Sylvie and I went to check for an egg and

BEHOLD:
OUR FIRST EGG! You have no idea the level of excitement that ensued over this egg. SO EXCITING. Thomas came home and fried it up and it was delicious. Sylvie is usually kind of meh on eggs, but she gobbled this one up and can't wait for more.
Max took a day off and then the following morning she laid her second egg. Sylvie feels very strongly about retrieving Max's eggs herself, and unfortunately Max's second egg ended with a splat on the office floor and poor, sad Sylvie asking "can we still eat it?" (We did not.) So we have a new plan for retrieving the eggs that involves bringing our egg carton out to the coop with us, to better ensure safe passage to the fridge.

Also, I need to do some research on the egg laying process so that I can better explain it to Sylvie because our first conversation on the subject went something like this:

Sylvie: How did Max lay the egg?
Me: Well, it's a hen's way of making a baby.
Sylvie: The egg is Max's baby?
Me: Not exactly, because Max and Penny are both girls, so there's no daddy to make it a baby chicken.
Sylvie: How did it come out of Max's body?
Me: Sort of the same way pee-pee comes out of your body.
Sylvie: Max pees eggs?

See what I mean? But anyway, way to go Maxine! And let's go Penny, you slacker. Here are a few recent pictures of Max and Penny taken by Sylvie.

Great post Nadine! Was totally laughing out loud. I'm planning on being invited over for an omelette when they both get going :)
